Heating

HVAC Services you can count on

The process of heating interior spaces has significantly improved since the early days of wood- or coal-burning heating systems. Now there are so many options for heating your home or business that it can be difficult to figure out the best option for your needs.

Smart Heating and Air works with knowledgeable heating services professionals that will assist you in determining the best choice for a new installation or advise you about repair and maintenance of your existing system.

Types of heating systems

One of the most common types of heating systems is forced-air furnaces. But there are other types of systems that have been in use for many years. Depending on your heating objectives, they may be an attractive alternative to the standard system.

  • Solar heat uses energy from the sun to heat a fluid (either liquid or air). The heat is transferred to the interior space or to a storage system for later use.
  • Radiant heat is transferred from a source in a ceiling panel, wall or floor and warms people and things in a space rather than directly heating the air. Like solar heating, radiant heating can be a clean and efficient method of heating your living spaces.
  • Boilers heat water which then passes through a system of pipes and radiators to warm the interior space. Well-maintained boilers have a reputation of providing consistent and lasting heat throughout a home.
  • Electric heat is produced when a device converts an electric current into heat which is then distributed through the interior space. Types of electric heat producers may include baseboard heaters, forced-air furnaces, convection heaters, or radiant heat.
  • Baseboard heat is basically a “zone” system that can heat each room individually or act as a supplemental heat source in individual spaces. The system may be hydronic or electric.
  • Heat pumps are generally best suited for moderate climates. The types: air-to-air, water, or geothermal obtain heat from the outside and distribute it throughout the interior.

Smart Heating and Air partners with heating service providers that have experience and expertise in each of these heating systems.

Installation

If you plan on purchasing a new system, identifying least the following 3 considerations will help to ensure a successful outcome:

  • Your specific needs and objectives for the new system
  • Advantages or limitations of your home
  • Planned budget with all related expenses

Each technology has pluses and minuses. Some systems provide a great alternative to the potential dust and debris that are sometimes found in duct systems. Other methods are considered “green” energy because the method of delivery doesn’t contribute to the use of fossil fuel burning and resulting climate impact. Some allow you to control which areas are heated, and how the heat is distributed, which can result in a savings of your heating costs.

However, differences in cost may also be a factor. Depending on the factors above and the availability in your area, converting from 1 system to another can mean significant increases in costs for installation. But the savings may be realized over time.

Maintenance & repairs

As with any system, regular maintenance is the only way to prevent unwanted repairs to your heating system. However, some of these systems rely on ductwork, pipes, or other heat conduits that are not easily accessible (under floors, in crawlspaces, in the ceiling) but they need regular maintenance just as much as more standard types of heating systems.

Regular check-ups, repairs, and replacement of worn parts will prevent disruptions of service and more costly repairs or new installation. With so many different types of heating systems, it’s critical to work with someone who understands your particular heating system as well as how to maintain it in excellent working order.

Smart Heating and Air service professionals are knowledgeable about your system and the heating needs in your region. They are partners in solving your heating needs and help you maintain your current system or find the right heating system for a new installation.
