HVAC Services you can count on
Advances in furnace technology results in greater functionality and reliability. But properly maintained units can perform well for many years. They run so well that we tend to forget about preventive maintenance. It only takes one furnace malfunction during extreme temperatures or at an inconvenient time (new baby, budget issues, big life event) to realize how critical it is to avoid unwanted surprises.
The best way to ensure that you can rely on your furnace throughout the year is to partner with a service professional who is skilled in furnace technology.
Smart Heating and Air works with highly skilled service providers in your local area. Our pros will discuss your options for maintenance and repair of your current furnace or walk you through the process of determining the best new unit for your family.
How does a furnace work?
There are a variety of options for heating your living areas or workspaces. Heating using hot water/boiler, heat pumps, solar, radiant, and electric heating are a few options for heating systems. But a forced air furnace is the most common type of heating for the average home.
Furnaces use natural gas or propane to generate hot air. A burner ignites the gas which warms a heat exchanger. Air comes from the ductwork and is blown over the heat exchanger to heat the air. The heated air is sent back or “forced” through the ductwork to warm the home. A thermostat regularly monitors the air temperature and notifies the furnace to turn on or off according to the temperature set on the thermostat.
Forced-air systems provide heat quickly, reliably, and efficiently. However, the system of ductwork adds another layer of complexity that can affect energy usage and costs if it is not properly and regularly maintained. Ducts should be inspected during routine maintenance to ensure gaps have not developed that would cause air to escape.
Sometimes the problem is as simple as a malfunctioning thermostat. Replacing the batteries sometimes does the trick. If that doesn’t work, our service pro can check the thermostat as part of the furnace maintenance.
When do you need a furnace?
Almost every home or business uses some sort of heating system, most frequently a forced-air furnace for home use. Businesses may use another type of heating system such as a heat pump, boiler, or industrial system.
Obviously, it’s an absolute must to have a reliable heating source for homeowners in cold climates. But even homes located in hot climates may need a furnace as weather events or temperature fluctuations can cause uncomfortable conditions. People with health challenges, sensitivity to temperature changes, or very young children and babies need the certainty of comfortable temperatures.
Maintenance & repair
Furnaces are relatively straightforward and operate on a simple concept of heating air and “forcing” it throughout the home. It partners with other components of your HVAC system to work correctly.
The best-case scenario for many homeowners is that their furnace has been so well-maintained that there’s no need to buy a new one – yet. A furnace may not be the most expensive investment in your home, but it can be a costly one if it is an unexpected and unplanned purchase. Even the most highly-efficient systems need regular maintenance and repairs to prevent unexpected breakdowns or disruptions in service.
Our service pros partner with you to understand the issues that you’re experiencing and test the system to determine the source of those issues. They’ll diagnose the problem, recommend solutions, and make the necessary repairs. Part of the process is also performing a “tune-up” to ensure your furnace is running at peak efficiency for as long as possible.
Installation of a new furnace
Eventually, all good furnaces need to be replaced. You’ve done all you can to maintain your furnace over the years.
